Although there is nothing that can beat a classic safari holiday to the Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Kruger, there are numerous other great safari locations: Chobe and the Okavango Delta in Botswana; Hwange in Zimbabwe; Etosha in Namibia; Queen Elizabeth in Uganda and South Luangwa in Zambia. However, here is further information on those top four safari parks.
The Masai Mara Game Reserve has one of the highest densities of wildlife and birds to be found on the continent. It covers 1,800km² of the south-west corner of Maasailand and is an extension from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The park offers outstanding scenery including forests and rivers, hilly escarpments, plains, bush and scrub. It is noted for its lion, hyena, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, cheetah and leopard. In the Mara River pods of hippo and crocodile can be seen.

The Serengeti (meaning 'endless plains in Maasai') is unequalled for its natural beauty and contains more than 3 million large mammals all spread over a vast area of 14,700km². Its main fame lies in its millions of plains game animals which provide the greatest wildlife spectacle in the world – the migration. Wildebeest, zebra, lion, cheetah, warthog, hyena and hippo are prolific here as well as a profusion of birdlife. The landscape changes from the vast treeless central plains to thick scrub and forest. Linking these areas is the savannah, dotted with acacia trees and magnificent rock outcrops.

The ancient crater at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, measures 20 kilometres in diameter and is the largest unbroken, intact and unflooded caldera (collapsed cone of an ancient volcano) in the world. Often described as a natural zoo, the crater offers outstanding opportunities for seeing a large variety of wildlife, including the highly endangered black rhinoceros. It is often referred to as a microcosm of Africa, with forest and grasslands, as well as freshwater and soda lakes.

Kruger National Park is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, offering superb viewing
opportunities all year round. One of the first national parks to be established in Africa, it is
sanctuary to over 700 species of mammals, reptiles and birds. The landscape is varied and fascinating.
Stretching for some 350 kilometres and sharing a common border with Mozambique and Zimbabwe,
much of the park consists of flat grass and scrubby plains. It supports an enormous variety of wildlife
including elephant, giraffe, zebra, Cape buffalo, many antelope species, white rhino, lion and leopard.
