Itinerary:
DAY 1, CAIRO
Arrive in Cairo and transfer to your hotel.
DAY 2, El FAIYOUM
Transfer to El Faiyoum and check into the Auberge du Lac resort overlooking Lake Qaroun - once the hunting lodge of Egypt’s last king, King Farouk. Later we take our vehicles into the desert to visit the protected area of Wadi El Rayan, site of the only waterfall in Egypt. After a picnic lunch we continue to the UNESCO protected site ‘The Valley of Whales’, famous for fossils of the first existing whales on the planet and an area of spectacular desert scenery. We then return to El Faiyoum and join a local family for dinner in their farmhouse. (BLD)
DAY 3, EL FAIYOUM – CAIRO
This morning we enjoy a tour by horse drawn carriage through El Faiyoum and the outskirts of the town, with a chance to see the famous water wheels. En route back to Cairo we visit the ancient Ptolemaic city of Karanis. Upon arrival in Cairo we take lunch in a local restaurant overlooking the pyramids before we have a guided tour of this magnificent site. Later we head out into the surrounding desert on camels to watch the sun set – a truly unforgettable experience. In the evening, we have a tour of Cairo, including the more modern downtown area as well as its medieval heart, Islamic Cairo, visiting Khan El Khalili bazaar, one of the most ancient souks in the Middle East. Dinner tonight is in a restaurant in the heart of Islamic Cairo. (BLD)
DAY 4, CAIRO
Transfer to the airport for your flight home. (B)
