We are going on the Jewels of Egypt trip (June 5, 2010) and I wanted to know about suitcases. We currently only have medium suitcases with wheels and a handle...what suitcase styles and types does everyone recomend for this trip? Are our current suitcases adequate? Is this style case seen at all on this trip or would we be the only ones?
Thanks!

I don't remember the name of the tour i did when i was in Egypt, but it was with imaginative traveller and it was absoloutely fantastic. My cousins and i also did two weeks by ourselves.
My backpack looks like a suitcase, but it has straps for my back and a wheel function. I used it like a pack mostly.
Suitcases are hard to carry, and most of the seasoned travellers i know have backpacks.
Although you will probably find that you are able to use your wheel quite alot. I would certainly recommend buying a back pack, especially if you do more travelling after this trip. I like to think of luggage as an investment.
For the money conscious - I slowly payed off my lay-by for mine, which meant it didn't cut into my holiday savings as i was able to take it out of my general weekly budget.
I hope you enjoy Egypt as much as I did =)
Happiness does not decrease by being shared.
Thank you for the response ladybirdjc, what brand is your backpack bag? Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Thank you,
Mark
Hello Mark,
I enjoyed this beautiful tour some years ago. Have travelled in Egypt several times over the past 10 years.
I always use a top quality soft sided suitcase on roller blade wheels. There are times when you have to carry your own luggage which is why I prefer the roller blade wheels, just drag it along behind.
Hope this helps........Debbie
Mafesh Mushkelah!!!
I travelled on a similar tour in March last year and there was a wide variety of luggage amongst our group.
I would strongly advise a backpack for your main luggage together with a smaller daypack for when you're out and about at the sites during the day.
It is so much easier to strap on a backpack than to drag or carry a case, but as I mentioned earlier, there were a number of people on our tour with suitcases and they had no problems.
It's all about what you're comfortable with, but if you'd like my advice a good quality backpack is the way to go.
I agree with russ.
I was on this very tour. All of my group had backpacks bar 2 and they didn't find it as easy to get them around as the rest of us.
Hi mjsmiley
Some good advice from everyone. I agree a backpack is the way to go, as there are times you need to carry your baggage, to & from hotels and train stations, wheels are good but not always practical

HI, just a note regarding those backpacks, as a first time solo traveller i wanted comfort, yet the options of having wheels to just be able to pull my luggage around if i am to become tired or restless - i really looked into the bags - so i have found and got myself a backpack on wheels.
The exact brand is:
BERGHAUS (men) JALAN 70+15. (womens) JALAN 65+15. - "they dont come cheap - but to save your back i think it is worth it"
THIS I RECOMMEND TO ANYONE - you may get this type from your local camping and equipment shop - i dont recommend you get it from a bag shop as they dont have good quality ones, i have been to do my reasearch :D
This bag has: wheels, many compartments, hip strap (fantastic to balance out the weight), a side shoulder strap to carry it on your hip and also a day pack that is detachable to take with you for the day or attaches to the front of you pack with out you having to hold it - this fit all the necessities i wanted in a backpack i hope that this helps :D
