Intriguing Japan

Japan is one of our most popular destinations but one that many people find confusing.

One of our leaders tried to sum Japan up ‘in a nutshell’:

Tokyo - Capital of Japan. The Greater Tokyo Area, centered on Tokyo but also including Chiba, Kanagawa, and Saitama, is the most populous metropolitan area in the world with a population of over 35 million people. Despite Japan's overall declining population, it is still growing.

Kyoto - second most visited place in the world after Mecca. More than 2000 temples and shrines plus the most famous Zen rock garden in the world.

Himeji - home of the most visited castle in Japan. Famous for its confusing maze of paths leading to the main keep. Current structure dates from 17th Century.

Nagasaki - in the 16th Century this was the first port of call for visitors to Japan and so became a multi-cultural city. Site of atomic bombing in WWII.

Yufuin - famous spa town on the southern island of Kyushu. The town has the second largest volume of hot spring water in Japan.

Hiroshima – at 8.15am on August 6th 1945 Hiroshima became the first place that an atomic bomb was used on human population.

Miyajima Island – the entire island is a shinto shrine with the famous Floating Tori Gate providing a spectacular scene at sunset.
