Sometimes it seems easier to travel to destinations you find familiar, but one TV presenter has been extolling the benefits of going somewhere a bit more adventurous.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Chris Packham comments that people should go somewhere they find "shocking and exhilarating" - and that you shouldn't be afraid to travel to poorer countries.
I think he's right there - with so many places to see, it's well worth exploring those that are most different to where you live.
"To get the flavour of a place and fully understand it, you shouldn't try to live within your own comfort zone," Mr Packham comments.
Getting to know local people and eating local food is another great way to enhance your experiences while on holiday, as well as helping you understand more about the culture of your destination.
And if you're keen to explore Central America, one place you should consider getting to know is Cuba. Louise Roddon of the Telegraph recently recommended visiting the region as soon as possible to experience the spirit of the place, before impending cultural changes take hold.
